The Canary is classed as a Finch.
It is actually a fertile hybrid from African wild Canaries. These birds have been bred for centuries and have evolved to what we have today.
The Red Factor Canary is from generally the small yellow Border Canary and the Red Siskin. This breeding produces fertile males called F1's and infertile females
By using F1's this is where the first Red Factors came from. Over the years they have been bred to what we have today as well.
By the way it's not a silly question, the more questions people ask the better off they and their birds will be.
