Many areas to check & not all are obvious so best to use at least a few areas of comparison to back others up.
Intensity of red on the head and tail - both should be slightly darker and more intense on the male & more subdued and very slightly orange tinted on hens when viewed closely in the hand.
Area of red on head should be more extensive on male, particularly extending back behind the eye more than on hens.
The lores (between eye and beak) usually show a wider black area on hens.
The tail is generally longer on males with two well defined central feathers which slightly pin out beyond the end of the tail compared to hens.
The intensity of the green body colour is more vivid on males. Best compared with a bird in each hand looking at the belly area.
Whilst you have them upsidedown, most males have a few red feathers around the vent when mature. These are rare on hens.
Males are slightly broader across the skull. Best compared with bird in the hand looking down from above the head.
Hens lay eggs & cocks fertilise them.
