I have just recently had an owl attack on my gouldians and one of the fledglings has a broken wing and leg. I really need some help ASAP to try and help this little fledgling, he is also in a lot of stress. Any help will be good, thanks.

As I said in chat, if you have a hospital cage, put him in there to keep him warm. If not find some other way of keeping him warm, and dark. You could try giving him something like Spark maybe. Can't give any more help as not had to deal with it myself. Try google until you get some info from the more experienced keepers on the forum. Good luck. I hope he will be ok.

the most humane thing to do here (well it is what I would do) is to put the little blighter down.
not easy to do, but something all bird keepers face at some time.
The two ways I have found easiest to do this are
1. wring the birds neck or
2. gas the bird
sorry, finchman, I know you would have preferred to hear a more pleasant response than mine. hope another member may have one for you.

Thanks for the help, it wasn't what I was expecting but I will do anything in my power to try and help him way before thinking about putting him down. I want to give him the best chance at life.

Depends on how damaged he is if there is anything you can do mate. Possibly if it's not real bad tape the wing to his body, and splint the leg, but unfortunately the odds are not good.

Totally agree with mick but didnt want to say that.Broken leg and wing, that bird wont have much of life even if you manage to save him.Its not a nice job and ive only had to do it twice myself but sometimes its best to move on.

Thanks guys, he's wing is not broken, he must have been just playing with me because he flew with ease, it just looked broken. I have now put a splint on his leg and he is eating seed. I really hope he goes well.

Thanks Mick. Would the bird still go alright just with a broken leg?? Now that I have come to realize his wing is not broken. I have heard many stories of birds going perfectly fine with just one leg. I had this happen to one of my female button quails And she survived over 3 years with no leg and had also raised babies. She had to be one my favorite birds. It was ashame because she died on Christmas day 2009.
