I've moved into a new council region and have been informed that I may only keep a maximum of 30 finches. I may apply to increase that number, subject to neighbourhood approval. That in turn maybe quashed should new neighbours move in and object. What's the world coming too?? Do other councils apply such regulations?

If your talking about the same council I live in murf. I used to have about 10 small aviaries in the city limits with about 100 finches. I had no problems,But I guess its how you get on with your immediate neighbours, If your immediate neighbours don't mind, No one else will be the wiser. Does that mean you can have 30 aviaries, each with a single bird in them ? what ever you decided you would need to be prepared to follow regulations if needed. I am in no way endorsing what I did, Just telling you what I did.

Give me some elbow room Gomer. Any complaints from neighbours and I'll purchase 29 lorries and watch the air turn blue! You are right, we need to get on with everyone in this world. I'm just not used to red tape. Having lived in the country for the last 30 odd years I've forgotten what it's like to have neighbours. I no longer can go outside to "water the lemon tree."

It's a sad fact Murf but councils are becoming increasingly more restrictive when it comes to birdkeeping (and other matters).

You really need to do your homework. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that if I'm looking to move into a particular area, one of the first things I do is read the council by-laws on birdkeeping.

In a previous area in which I was living an aviary had to be at least 10m from the house and 2 m from the fence- which meant you couldn't keep birds in any of the average sized yards in the area. Their definition of an aviary- a structure which holds a bird. So by definition you weren't even allowed to hang a bird cage on your back verandah! Can you believe it?

The council officer's response was: " We don't make the rules, mate. We just enforce them". I could have killed the smug p*!&% !!

not sayong what I am up to but , here its pretty much the same no more than 10 birds of one species,30 max combined, can never work it out, most of the restrictions really apply to people who keep chickens and pigeons , just to cover thier butts they give a cross the board approach . You should be fine with finches as u dont let them out so they can crap on the neighbors houses in mid flight. aviaries with out a pemitt here can be no larger than 3m x 3m , all i can say is  to that i just have a walkway between them all.... pete

Most only say about an individual aviary, they don't say anything about having individual aviaries being grouped together, as long as they don't have a common wall, & have their own access door.
