Your right where you should be Harvey . When you think you can confidently breed and raise young from the birds you have then either the Goulds or Longtails would be a good specie to move onto .

Im sure you will do well mate , you already have the right idea , the right birds and a good set up .

Just watch your over crowding and what you see in the seed tray may not be seed it could be husk so make sure you check  Good luck in your endeavour and don't rush. Watch and learn.

They are certainly good species to start with, all good free breeders and with the canaries the added bonus of being able to see what is going on.
Best thing to do would be read up on the species profile pages on the forum and see which ones you either like the look of or think might fit in well. Then you can always ask again after you have had chance to think about it.
Would you get rid of the birds you have now to get other new species?

Plenty of time yet, if I remember right your birds have just laid eggs haven't they?

Zebras have built there nest,so hoping there might be eggs soon.

Someone said just be patient but its hard... :silent: :silent:

Yes Buzzard,Dad noticed the seed husk yesterday.I just blow the hush off..
Will they get the seed under the husks or will they think there is no more seed and starve,i check the seed every day???
They do eat a lot for such little birds..

Thanks Buzzard

harvey, the best advice i can give you is the following, experiment a bit with birds you have by trying different seeds, different mixtures of crushed biscuits etc (no chocolate just plain), different greens, veges and fruits etc, get a pad each week write all the things you did , then analyse the things you noticed that the birds liked, put in some different nesting material, see which one s they liked, and also write down the things you would not do again, the things the birds didnt like and the nesting material they did nt use. Save the information on the computer . Start keeping a record and learn from this so in the future you have something to go back to. This will help increase your knowledge and be better prepared for the challenges ahead. You told us you loved cricket, think of it this way would you rather hit two sixes and get out from rushing or take your time hit singles and score a hundred runs. You'll be right mate, enjoy and learn.

Harvey, I myself started with zebs ,canaries and manikins before I attempted anything else. 2 Years before I started with painteds and stars, then next year got saint helenas and Orange breasts, then the year after got rid of all my zebs and manikins to start off with gouldians and chestnuts, many years later I've tried alot of different finches with some success and some disasters but it all took time, an advantage for you is your still young with many great breeding years ahead of you and you have your dad on your side. Just remember that with more birds means more variety of nesting materials and nets and foods so a log book would be a very good idea especially if you choose to breed a finch that you previously have and got them back to try again .

I think I know what your idea is about that. You are wondering if you can talk your Dad into letting you have more aviaries or cabinets so that you can keep what you have and get more!
 You will get us into trouble with your Dad for encouraging you
Seriously though, it will be a decision that you will have to take many times when you have birds, both for their welfare and for the time you have available to care for them.
