Im going to ask a silly question..do hens collect for the nest? im still trying to workout what my crested society is,it never sings or displays so I thought a hen but in the last 48 hrs its started collecting grasses and become a nest lining fanatic so im thinking male

I sex them by as your said the cock crowing.I also look under the beak.I find the hens beak have a sharper V underneath than the cock birds.
Cocks have more of a U shape.Cock birds have a longer beak and the top has more of slight hook.Hens have a short beak and fairly straight,Yes I have also seen boths hens and cocks construct nests.

ok thanks,I guess I was right first time..i think its a hen.The beak matchs finchmans hen description and its fine grass shes collecting so prob just lining the nest to her comfort level
hopefully she is planning eggs or something,although there are 6 of the little devils in the nest most mornings,5 societys and the chestnut!
