for an aviary that size you are probably best just having a couple of pairs if you want them to breed.

i take it you are new to the hobby so start out with something cheap, docile and easy. many birds fit that description. bit it would probably be nice to have some more information..

how much are you prepared to spend? do you prefer colourful species? or song? personality?

It all depends on the species of finches you would like to have. A mixed aviary 5 pr would be OK. Birds like blue or red face parrot finches, orange breasts, cordons, ruddies, emblemas, red brows for example. OR a colony aviary, I use to have an aviary about that size with 5 - 7 pr of goudians. The possible over stocking rate that others will refer too was fixed by removing any fledglings when they had weaned, around 4-6 weeks old. This aviary produced 100's of chicks over the years.

I like all the suggestions so far. Emblema are a definite, OBs lovely little birds, personally I wouldn't be without these. I would also consider Double bars.

I'm with toothlessjaws, if you really want to give them the best prospects of breeding well, a couple of pairs only.
My suggestion: a pair each of Painteds & Orangebreasts.

I think just a couple of pairs. Maybe a pair of stars and a pair of painted.
The lest amount of birds in there the better the breeding results i think.
Good luck.
Anthony keeping Blue faced Parrot Finches/ normal yellow & Yellow fawn stars/ Melba's/ Red Faced Pytilia/ Fawn St Helena.
