tips on getting them to breed

Hi all,
Have put them out in the aviary, and they are looking fantastic
any tips on getting these guys to go down and breed? Matt said once they have started they really go

use soft hay and straw for nest building also can use hessian for lining and they love white feathers they will go nuts for them they usually use a box or basket high in the aviary

J you have enough knowledge to have a good breeding season!! the only tip I can give you is copious quantities of nesting material at all times situated in an area that minimises the disturbance of nesting birds, and keep the soft food fresh and a good supply of live food. Good luck and much success. (PS Keep the Camera to a minimum when they first fledge there may be fluff balls in other nests)

oh, if it were so Buzz unfortunately whatever I know makes no difference on what the birds do
well it's lovely and sunny and has been for a few days now and the male is looking just gorgeous - I don't see how she can resist

J, all we can say from experience is that you are heading in the right direction, good food, water, nesting materials, brush etc. However two things that I think are the key to these guys are - privacy or as litle disturbance as possible and Live food, live food and live food. Once they go, hang on for the ride as they will reward you many times in one season.

Also given you live in a slightly colder part of the world you may have to wait a few more weeks yet You should get an idea when they are ready when the male starts chasing the mum all day long and he starts his high pitched whistling.

Agree that they really need some warm weather to start them off - more so than RF or BF. They particularly love emu feathers in any quantity for nest lining & appreciate privacy. Many people use only nestboxes but most of mine nest in vegetation - dense & private. Compatability is a key factor with Tri-colours - well bonded pairs which show obvious compatability from early on are the most productive breeders by far.

they are just about the most beautiful parrot finch in my opinion. love mine!

Thanks everyone yes the male has been singing, though not in my prescence so i can't see if he's chasing her or not.
go the bamboos but I think Tris would be high on the list after them
Tiaris I'll try and give them some more privacy - need to get the secateurs out soon! all mum's melaleucas look like they need a "trim
