Does any one own canaries

Hi, I bought a canary the other day and put it in the aviary it SINGS SO LOUD for ages I am hoping he is not disturbing any of my neighbours. Does any forum members who have canaries have them in an aviary and do they think they are noisy????????????????

I forgot to say I LOVE his singing but the aviary is near my neighbours bedroom and he starts singing early.

Plenty of people keep them in Avairies..put them into cabinets for breeding....but I suppose they could annoy some neighbours...just like cats annoy me they usually only sing to impress a mate..once he mates he will probably quieten down....If you keep him as a single bird he will keep singing... .....could keep him in the dark (put towell over his cage) till later in the morning

Hi Lynn I do keep canaries and breed them, I have them in my aviery and in cabinets. As for noise mine are load but sound so nice, your male should be a problem with finches unless he starts to get bossy especially around the food and water dishes. To make him stop singing I would look at getting a hen so breeding may commence but this doesn't work 100% of the time,if you put another male in you'll end up with two males singing. Thanks for the replies, I was'nt going to get a female as I bought him on impluse and I am getting to many birds. He is in the big aviary, i have a smaller aviary on our deck not near the neighbours it has 2 pairs of old zebs in there I may put him in there and think about getting a female for him. I have heard it is hard to sex canaries, is it true the females don't sing only the male bird????

I went and got a boy canary a month ago and got such a shock to hear how loud he sings and how often im thinking he will get some ladies soon as he gets on my nerves sometimes,iv never heard one before
I think its very tunefull from about 12 m away but closer gets a bit much

I love hearing my canaries singing, especially when all 8 males are singing against each other, and they start dancing up and down the perch.

If you get a hen then he will still be singing up a storm until he gets her to nest.

I don't know about your neighbour, but I like waking up in the morning and hearing them singing.

I would hate to not have canary song round my place. The avairys are down the back and I can hear the boy sing no trouble. He has 2 hens down and not stopping his song. My neighbour loves him too.

I would have to disagree with vettepiolt as in some very rare cases that a hen can sing, not as good as a male but still can sing good enough to think its a male, but with such rare cases odds would be in favour that its a cock. As for sexing it can be difficult to sex canaries if you dint know what to look for, and if the Canary is young it makes it difficult. I myself like to wait to breeding season comes before I sex any young as this time if year I have the best chance not to sell somebody the wrong sex. Lyn if you go to a breeder they shall be able to pick out a hen for you as well as give you background info of the bird as well as the diet in which it was raised. But please keep in mind that not everybody can have a 100% success rate in sexing all their stock even in my many years of breeding canaries I've made 1 mistake that I know of.
