well thats it. i'm officially out of OB hens.....again.

after only just purchasing some new hens for this season a few months ago i am already out, before the season here in melbourne has properly begun. the last one was found dead this morning, probably night fright from all the wind we had last night.

why are hens sooooo fragile!!

well thats it. i dont think i can force myself to part with cash again to replace them.

fortunately i have 2 pr of cinnamon ruddies, a pair of cubans, a pair of tri coloured parrots and a trio of weavers to focus on.

but as of OBs - thats like 6 hens now!!!

Hopefully someone on here might do a little swap with you to keep you going ...shame about the situation and hope something pops up for you before the breeding season is over for the year .

That's sad to hear TJ, 130km winds on Monday was extremely bad have found that alot of my plastic which was covering a section was shredded in alot of places, if your interested might do a swap with you after breeding season as I only have 1pair breeding this year and they are on a nest at the moment.

If you were closer you could have one of the young I have in the nest, assuming one will be a hen. Im wanting another hen myself for another very lonely cock bird, judging by his early morning calls.

Orange breast are normally hardy, young hens can beome egg bound in cold weather I had one myself this winter.
Always ensure plenty of shell grit, egg shells etc..is available at all times
I use solar garden lights or led night lights in case of a fright at night they can see where they are going and not break their necks.
It has been cold and very windy down there, it is a must to keep the cold winds off the birds

It may be time to start looking at causes and fix these. Losing 6 hens from one species would have me looking at my setup, not looking for more hens.

Hi Toothless, Don't forget to breed dozens of cinnamon ruddies this year so I can restock.

i do have to admit, six was a bit of an exaggeration - it was four OB hens. three of those to egg binding. i often don't get home from work till after dark so it can be hard to get a sick hen in time. when i do find them i have nursed many back to health. as for the setup - i am improving it all the time. for example installed a heater this winter and probably will put garden lights in now given my first case of fatal night fright.

but i thought i made it pretty clear i wasn't looking for more hens.
