Before I go through the procedure of building a a fly box, does anyone know where i could buy a fly box and the cost, if reasonable price might save me time and not build one.

Hi,

Borg's Brooders recently had an article in one of the bird mags (I think) about their new fly box.
OK - just found an ad in ABK - Aug-Sept 2011 - $265 + freight. 0433 499 954

David Borg has an add on Petlink at the moment for his flyboxes - http://www.petlink.com.au/Classifieds/sale/2023680.html
I recall seeing one somewhere - same thermostat and general melamine construction as his brooders. I've been using one of his brooders for handraising eclectus. I've also modifed it for use as a hospital cage for finches and also great for sprouting seeds when the weather's a bit cool. I don't know how well his flyboxes work, but you'd pay over $100 for a decent thermostat and I'd imagine all the other parts would be at least another $100, so his price seems reasonable to me.

If I was going to build another fly box I would think seriously about using one of those large plastic rectangle boxes that have a clip down lid
and sit it on its edge.
You would then cut a section out of the lid for ventilation(300mmx300mm approx) and glue fly wire across the front, cut in a door at one end.
The hardest part for some is wiring in TWO globe holders.
The reason for the plastic box is it is cheap but so easily cleaned, unclip the lid and full access.
Why 2 globes,if one blows you still have warmth and it enables the flies to spread out.
There is no need for a thermostat if you keep an eye on the flies, if they are all huddled around the globes put in a slightly higher wattage ones
if they are hanging on the wire or hiding behind the water container change the globes to a lower wattage
It should be made for well under $50
My current boxes have Malamine surfaces but the are hard to clean even with a pressure hose.
Remember you need as many flies as you can fit into the boxs
