I first introduced myself to the forum in May this year and was planning to build an aviary from scratch. I like to build in wood. I have limits on what I can build due to restricted access and dimensions in the garden. So I was procrastining a bit for a while over design and materials. However things were coming to a head recently when "one who has to be obeyed" mentioned that the bit of space i had previously reserved would look good with a crop of tomatoes this season, and I had better make a decision smartly. So, I felt the pressure was on. Incidentally I was browsing Gumtree last night and came across an ad for aviary and birds, only about 12 kms from where I live, and it looked quite attractive and the dimensions fitted the 'reserved' space like a glove. So I made contact with the sellor and the long and short of it was that we met this morning, and now the title deeds for the lot rest with me. My partner took it quite well, with the odd 'one liner' about what it takes to get me moving along. I have a bit of site preparation at home to do and the sellor is looking after several recently fledged gouldians, so I won't do the transfer for about 3 weeks. So more to follow from me in the very near future and probably a lot of questions, because it has been a while...

It is Nathan, except for when I was a young teenager. My Dad introduced me to redbrows (ex coastal NSW) and a lot of reading. I guess I have a more refined interest now, and I actually want to learn a thing or two. I'm thinking though of only attempting to keep "reddies" in the future.
I am just wondering whether I can dispense with a concrete floor and perhaps put barrier mesh around the limestone wall base to keep out mice. I would like to plant native shrubs in the aviary as well, perhaps some of the 'waxes' that are prevalent in the west here. Any suggestions or ideas warmly received.
Cheers

2 of my aviaries have mouse mesh and a good amount of grass growing through . Not so hard to keep neat with pair of scissors .
Other half made a frame covered in mouse mesh and after the aviaries were up slipped the frames in so there were no gaps ...

I hope this photo takes. It has taken me three weekend to prepare the site, relocate the aviary and fix into place plus stock it out. I had no idea how much work it takes. Birds finally went in this arvo, I think they are happier, then being cooped in a smaller aviary. Have got:
2 pr gouldians, 3 x painted, 1 x red brow, 3 x yellow stars , 3 x african fires, 1 pr plumheads, 3 x blue faced parrot. Very mixed eh. I have left 5 young gouldians in the smaller holding aviary, which I will swap or sell asap.

here is the smaller aviary. can you keep red faced parrot finches with blue faced? What should i do with the smaller aviary after i move the young gouldians on, ie what can i keep there comfortably.
