Good morning all,
Just a brief note to say hello and introduce myself.
My name is Kristen Reeves, I reside in the Michigan (the "mitten" on the map) in the United States and have been keeping and breeding birds for just over a decade. My true love is the Lady Gouldian finch, but I also keep several other species including Chestnut Breasted Mannikins, Cherry (Plum Headed), Stars, Bicheno (Owls), Parsons, African Silverbills, Blue Capped Cordon Bleus, Cuban Melodious, American Singer and Yellow Mosaic canaries, and a show line of crested and non-crested American Society finches.
I have spent nearly all of my birding years figuring out what makes Lady Gouldians tick, then have used that information to breed other Australian species. I have mainly concentrated on preserving the normal colorations of my Gouldian flock while dabbling in other species to keep my brain working! I take their nutrition very seriously and have worked hard to perfect their diet in my environment to obtain exceptionally healthy stock and good breeding results. My birds are as much a giant research project as they are pets, show birds, and bred for sale.
I enjoy showing my birds and have done well in the 3 years since I first began showing, earning many top bench wins each season. Since I feel it is extremely important to get our young folks interested in the hobby, I have encouraged my children to choose birds they'd like to breed, taught them how to care for them and what makes a genetically sound bird. They participate at our local bird club functions and act as Stewards and Secretaries or fill in where needed. I love to see the looks on their faces when one of their own birds makes top bench! It is truly priceless!
Because I run a small bird supply business and have 4 exceptionally active children and husband (of 23 years), I do not usually have much time to participate in the forums, but I do enjoy reading posts when I have a few extra moments to just sit and read! I love hearing about the experiences of other breeders and enjoy sharing when I have time. I look forward to reading more here and making new friends!
New to your forum, not new to finches!
