Hi, I have my first Zebra flegings now two weeks out of the nest. When do I seperate them from the parents? The hen has started laying eggs in the same nest - which I have been removing - should there be a break between clutchs? And when do the babies beaks colour up and have their first malt?

Thanks :)

Hi Lyn, don't take out the young zebs till they are fully capable to eat on their own due to mums always nest not long after young fledge so dad will continue to feed and teach them to eat. They should be eating around 2-3 weeks by themselves some are quicker and some will take longer. As for giving them a break inbetween its not necessary but I ould stop them after the 4th clutch as both mum and dad will start to get a bit tired.

Hi Lyn,

a good rule of thumb is most species are independent at 4 weeks. You should only allow 3 back to back nest before giving the hen a rest. Zebs normally colour up at about 3-4 months old.

Good luck!

Hi Lyn

I usually separate them when the black on their beak is almost disapereing, except for the black taking up a quater of the beak. Or you could just separate them at 4 weeks old. I think its a good idea to give them a little rest in between, depending on the size of the clutch!

Cheers!
