At the Ballarat sale I bought what I was told - a pair of Normal yh Gouldians. This pair had 5 fledge 3 days ago - 3 look "normal" 2 are all over a cream colour ?? with cream to yellow beaks. I try to only breed normals in my aviaries any ideas what the 2 could be (Hard, I realise without pic's).All are strong healthy young.

Cant really complain...Unless you specifically bought pure normal gouldians 'without splits' which Ive never seen advertised at sales.
You bought normals and normals what you got
Thats where you dont get that chance talking to the previous owners of the birds for them to tell you either way...Sales are always a gamble, sometimes for good or for bad

Don't be annoyed , life's too short for that .
Dissapointed perhaps ... and it might be fun to see what you end up with ...

Sadly this is exactly why I and others are commenting and posting about.
How irresponsible a large percentage of Mutation breeders are by simply letting unwanted splits or possible splits go into the market as pure normal birds.
As I have said before I do not have a problem at all with regard mutations within our hobby. The disregard with off loading splits has virtually destroyed a number of species. The first the common Zebra Finch,Red Faced Parrot Finches,Gouldians,Painted Finches and now try and get a pure normal Red headed Star Finch, to name a few. Yes sadly those mutation breeders guilty of the disregard of others will if not already ruin it for alot of others.
It is bad enough now when an odd bird turns up,what will it feel like when a clutch of chicks fledge and numerous mutated chicks land on the perch.
Good for some I guess but not for me.
As for being annoyed, that is up to you,as for me I would be p...ed off well and truely.
Sorry Deb but I Do take it seriously

EOrix you are not going to pick a pair of birds off the shelf and assume they are pure birds, sure they are normals but to their parental background?...when there is no indication that they are pure from the shop.
You are going to set out to find a breeder with pure normals...Im right? right?
No doubt in the future if not already, prices will do a flip and mutations will be cheaper than pure birds with pure wild colour genes.

Taking a guess that they could be split yellow (but which I could not say) if the young are pale. If the pair were sold to you as pure normals you have a right to be annoyed. If you just assumed they were because they looked like they might be then no you don;t. Yes perhaps you should be told, but equally if it matters to you, surely you would ask?

Can't be yellow backs unless the cock is in fact a single factor yellow back and not a normal in the first place. The giveaway would be the absence of a the black line around the head, as while most SF yellow backs are lighter in colour than normals I have one that could be passed off as "normal" to anyone who didn't know the difference.finchbreeder wrote:Taking a guess that they could be split yellow (but which I could not say) if the young are pale. If I was after "pure" normals I guess I'd be annoyed too and fair enough. I was just trying to suggest with my previous post that disappointment can be still turned to be a positive.
I agree that breeding mutations for the sake of it make life difficult for others who want to enjoy "the original" (that's the environmentalist in me speaking). There are mutations I see no point in at all (such as white breasted scarlet neophemas) and others I'll breed quite happily. For me the real issue here, other than E Orix's point, is that we shouldn't take for granted anything that we are told about a bird's lineage until we have proved it by our own breeding success - in the same way as many of us gladly pay extra for a "split" bird just because the breeder said it was so.
And seriously, if you don't want them in your collection I'd be happy to have them in mine (that's the geneticist in me speaking now).
