Okies folks I'm seeing the signs of a candida flare up in this baby Purple Crown .
Loss of appetite and vomiting , early signs I think as there's no lethargy or fluffing up .

Started with the last feed for the day yesterday and then again this morning so Ive started this ....Nystatin 20 minutes before each feed ( 4 times daily)
feeding dry mix with pedialyte and quite runny ( stopping the wet mix to reduce the sugar intake and thus not feeding the candida ) and then every hour a top up with Pedialyte .

Turned the thermostat up to 28 degrees . Si does this sound alright ? Can anyone think of anything else or if I'm doing something wrong ?

Also when would be a safe period of time to see an improvement in appetite before I need to see a vet and will I need a probiotic for after using Nystatin ?

Thanks... Oh have done the 2 doses of Nystatin / runny formula and she didn't vomit any back up.

Sounds like you are on the right track Deb.
It is important when using nilstat to give it without food because it only works by direct contact with the yeast.
If the crop emptying is slow you can give a weak solution of fennel tea which will help get things moving again.
I generally don't worry too much about probiotics after yeast infections, but it won't hurt either.

Let us know how she gets on.

Oh is .5ml of Nilstat / Nystatin the right dose ???

Funny after I posted this I went out the river to get grass seeds and came across some huge fennel plants and thought to myself hmmmm ,I wonder if that's any good for the birds ...

You can make fennel tea out of leaf (fresh or dried), seed or shredded bulb.
The seed is used as a poultice or as a tea in humans as a galactagogue (ie: makes nursing mothers' milk run).
Don't know how that relates to finches, but the leaf tea is probably the safest (ie: least potent) preparation to experiment with.
Myzo may have a recipe, and no doubt there are commercially available fennel teas....

Hi Matty,

It obviously causes their breasts to enlarge, so the crop has something to empty into!!
Didn't you go to medical school??

Di,
I have no experience with the fresh plant, only with the teas, but I'm sure you can follow Matty's advice.
The idea is to make a weak fennel tea ie just enough to lightly colour the water- and either feed this on its own for the first few feeds until the crop empties normally again. The fennel tea can then be used as the water component of any hand-rearing formula- starting off runny then thickening as the crop function improves until normal formula thickness is achieved.

Technically your dose is quite high but in practice it should be fine. Nystatin is not absorbed by the body but just works topically in the gut so the worst that an overdose will do is to cause diarrhoea- hard to tell in a lorikeet!! :D

found the fennel tea in tea bag form at health food shop .
crop emptied last night  little bugger is very active today thus the one finger typing .....other hand controlling bird on electrolyte rush

not having big feeds yet but obviously the pedialyte is helping ...may cut that back today in case she is filling up on that thus less formula which brings me to the next question ....what on earth do i feed it ? i have on hand pretty bird 19 / 12 hand rearing formula , vetafarm rice lorikeet food and a wet mix i make myself ?

nothing like a challenge hey !

thanks again for all the help ..

Hyper is bad when you open the Princess Parrot cage and an explosion of blue feathers make their way out for a free fly .
