hello all again, its been a while, and it has taken me sometime to return to the forum where upon i was greeted with many welcomes, so even though im late, thank you all for the warm welcome, finch madness still persists, i have my aviary inside, for those who wonder how they manage through a hills winter.
the note for today is that i am down to one long tail, and he is miserable, even seeking me out for company as the long tails we free to fly around the house and have made many nests,( in an old chandelier in the hallway) and the book shelves. i love these little guys, so very funny, hopping around the bread board after lunch or raiding the salt bowl.
the stories go on, and yes, we are bonkers, but, if anyone out there would have some long tails ( we call ninja's due to their habit of thinking we cant see them when they are flying off with bits honey from the bowl)..... i am in desperate need of company for our one last long tail. over the last year we had two occasions where they thought outside looked pretty good and lost both this way, hence, only one now., and i fixed the spot where they escaped from.
or if you might know someone who might want a really nice home for some long tails, Ive tried the s.a bird company, and they are low on birds coming in this spring, so not looking good.
id really appreciate any suggestions from who or where...
warm regards and......i will be checking in this time to keep the chatting going.
thanks everyone
sally. Adelaide hills.

hi there, yes we are quite mad, i will post some pictures, there are about 5 mixed color zebras out at present , and our one remaining long tail, it began when we tried to create harmony in our mixed aviary, our long tails didn't like anyone, so the transfer began slowly, from a smallish hanging cage, over a few months, to being free to fly around a bedroom , and at dusk, they would return to sleep and we would shut the door, then over the years, they decided they wanted to check out the house, and after a while stopped returning to the cage, and made nests in the old bookcase, etc, so thats how complete madness began. there are risks evolved, as we found out, it only takes one afternoon in spring for my 12 year old to air her room out ,, not noticing the screen had been removed for cleaning. we have dogs inside, they have all learnt to keep out of each others business, this arrangement wasn't intentional, it evolved. and yes, im bonkers, thanks for the note, photo,s will be sorted in the next day or two,
sally.

Wow! That's something you don't see everyday. I once had a cockatiel and a budgie that lived all over the house - slept on top of the bookshelf. But never seen it done with finches. Sorry to say Sally, but actually you are quite mad!
I have plenty of longtails and would love you to have a few, but they're all yellow billed and I suspect I'm a bit too far from you.

used to love longtails until they started killing off my orange breast hens. but I think those photos might have rekindled the love

hi there, yes it is a shame that you have the yellow bill indeed, never mind, laughed a great deal at your message, yes i think i am now quite mad, mind you, it happened organically, a long, but very funny story, i will post it for everyones entertainment, as if nothing else, you will all have a giggle.SamDavis wrote:Wow! we all need some madness in our day, and even though, this wasn't planned , and it happened slowly, i cant imagine life without being swooped by a little flock of birds.....in my kitchen.,
im going to try to get my wake up by the long-tail on film, as i don't think even i believe it, every morning, without fail, i get swooped for half an hour by this little chap talking his head off.....yep.......its complete madness, and the insane asylum for me i fear, but..........that is what birds do to you....make you crazy.
thanks for all the sharing everyone, please send some pictures of the finches you keep, i am still largely ignorant of the many varieties there are,
kind regards
sally.
