Hi all, see info below which I just saw posted on gumtree. Not sure if it is genuine or how widespread...
Warning finch fanciers, breeders, buyers and enthusiasts!!! .
It has been brought to my attention that finch keepers and breeders have been targeted by thieves and robbed of finches recently across the metro area . The culprits appear to be using personal details posted on gumtree to gain access to the location of aviaries and then breaking in and stealing the birds . It appears they are targeting the more expensive breeds of around the $100 and up mark ... So to all of you selling birds online I advise you to be extra vigilant and double check who you are giving your details to and not to post street names or house numbers online . And if you see the more expensive breeds going for abnormally low prices then its probably a good idea to steer clear or investigate why the birds are so cheap ... Pardon the pun ... So if it sounds too good to be true or maybe a little suss then it probably is !!! remember that padlocks are merely a deterrent and really wont stop thieves gaining access to your prized birds .... Cheers

I am sure it is true . . and I live no where near Perth

It is also true wherever you live . . and no matter the bird varieties you keep

Bird/ aviary security should always be on your mind

If I were an old grump, I would say that it is a sign of the times, because of the diminishing respect that is held for the rights and property of others

Many articles have been written, and they should be re-read :geek: from time to time by all, and be compulsory reading for 'newbies'

"It's a sign of the times!!"

That sucks, and these type of people are the lowest of the low, I for one would like to see much tougher sentencing laws because these mongrels know that if they're caught they'll more than likely just get a slap on the wrist.

Thanks for the warning.

HEY flap where did you get that from was it emailed to you....its very interesting, the other day I posted one of our cars on gumtree ( not bagging gumtree) and within 10 mins of posting i had 2 scammers wanting to buy my car and pay with paypal and send a courier to pick up the car, its going to happen , it happens in the quokka and thats why some people wont sell the hard or expensive stuff to unkowns and makes it very hard .
The best advice is to have birds in an holding cage that you want to sell well away from what you keep as to keep prying eyes away...pete

Zipman - sadly they let people off lightly for worse crimes than bird stealing... :-(
Poitta - no it wasn't emailed to me, I saw it while looking at birds on gumtree. And yes, we are selling our car and had exactly the same experience, in fact almost missed out on genuine buyers thinking they were scammers!

Yeah we've had the scammers before, they give themselves away when a txt comes from an international number though!!

Also when they ask me to email them from said txt!! Shocking though.

Had them try to buy a bike I sold and wanted to pay by paypal.

Happens here to and with carsales.com too
If we ever sell like that we put in the ad please ring, texts and emails will not be answered they still text and email but we just ignore them. Far better to miss out on a genuine buyer than get ripped off or robbed.

Not quite the same but equally if not more dispicable is this ....
At the end of our street is a fenced off paddock where the Girl Guides and Boy Scouts have mini jamborees , a couple of weekends ago they had retired to their swags and tents for the night only to wake up to find that they had been robbed while asleep .

The thieves jumped the fence and then rooted around their belongings taking what they thought valuable ...how bloody scary is that and how lucky that no one woke up .

Next door neighbours ...robbed ..method was to hoist a small child through the bathroom window and then get the kid to open the front door and yes the neighbours were asleep in the house .

Sadly the world is not such a nice place anymore ....my last birds sales were from my car in the parking lot of the hospital , I throw off by saying my place is too hard to find and Ill meet them there .

If they do come to the house I meet and greet in the garage , I dont have a squillion tied up in birds but they are all special too me .
Accept that some days you are the pigeon, and some days you are the statue.
