I had a rat slip through the corrugations on the roof, walk along the wire mesh ceiling until it found a weak spot and it cjewed into the birdroom, killed a pair of Gouldians and (apparently) left thesame way. If you haven't done so, can I suggest you look upwards and see if there is any entry through the ceiling? Just a thought.

I'm sorry for your loss KB,i know what your feeling like,i had nearly my whole collection stolen a few years ago but they were the two legged human type thieves as they left their calling cards with damage to the aviaries.
One question, were your aviaries padlocked :wtf: Craig

Thanks guys! I just feel so bad for the birds :( Aviaries are all padlocked and I have a big scary dog in my backyard that doesnt let anyone near the fences :) The only clue I have is a gross smelling long sticky turd which makes me thinnk reptilian. My gut instinct is telling me snake.. rats are not very common here, only the native bushrats. Mouse control is good too.

I have had a snake snare finches while stuck in wire through the roof of aviary....needless to say a pair of hedge trimmers worked wonders...

Snake would be the obvious culprit but you`d the think the access point would be obvious, also if they ate that many birds then you also would assume it would be hard to get back out. Terd sounds like snake though. Check for big headed ants too, its a long shot but they can disappear baby birds in a day or so without a trace.

So sorry to hear about your loss KB, hope you figure out what happened and don't lose any more birds.
Also good luck with the impending arrival. :-)

Could it have been a two legged thief that got hold of your birds?

So Ive had 2 male zebra finches in the aviary over the last 3 nights and they are still there. On the weekend I will re spray and re bait and put all the brush back in and start slowly putting birds back in.

Im pretty confident it was a snake. Thanks for all your suggestions. Ive been a bit upset about it all as I cant just look in the Quokka or pop down to Birdworld to replace stock. Its quite a mission and an expense to get birds up here to me.

Ive already had a couple of kind forum members willing to help me out :) Makes joining this forum all the more worthwhile!

Cross fingers Ive had my last snake issue for a while! The temp and humidity are right up now so the reptiles are on the move!!
