I thought it was best to start a new topic. As I am a tad confused about how Zeb's bread & incubate there eggs.

Last tuesday my hen started to lay. First egg was on the floor of the cage. That I noticed very soon after it was laid, as it was still warm. That egg I placed in there nest and both the hen & cock promptly went to see what I did. Then shortly after the same day the hen was siting in the nest & then vacated where there was another egg. Then the next day she laid another egg. Then began sitting on the nest. So I thought she was incubating the eggs. This morning thursday when I removed there cover. She came out of the nest. At first I wasnt concerned, but she stayed out & only went to have a look. I had a busy day so was away from home till the evening. When returning both my Zebs were carrying on with such a clatter & family members said they have been this way all day. Checking the nest there is now FOUR eggs. I know they can lay up to TEN eggs & the eggs don require sitting on for 7 days. But that one day she did sit would have started incubation ? This is there first attempt at having a family & there nest building attempts were poor until I found a canary nest that they took too immediately.

Really am tired writing this so hopefully it does make sense

I mentioned to a friend my Zeb's were laying he said his dad used to have them & they can sense the egg temperature with there beaks just standing over the nest. Is this true or fiction ?

It is quite some time since I bred Zebra Finches but their management is the same as most seed eaters.
I can not remember ever having 10 eggs in a clutch unless two females were laying in the same nest. General clutch size is 4 eggs.
People with only a small number of birds generally spend alot more time fiddling with their birds and forget the golden rule, "leave the birds alone" and let them get on with trying to rear their brood. The more meddling the more chance of them dumping their clutch.
Leave well alone except when feeding them, don't keep giving them small treats through the day, organise your feeding first thing in the morning then if you wish a top up in the afternoon. The rest of the time watch from afar. The end result will far out weigh any constant attention.
Even today after many years of experience I am still reluctant to inspect nests because being too curious has cost me badly in the past.

Have had Zebs and still do for 20 odd years.
Normal nest is 4 - 6 some start sitting at 2nd egg some not till 4th, like people different strokes for different folks.
If she starts sitting and stops don't worry the worst that will happen is that egg is practice and she can get it right with the rest.
And yes don't worry, leave them too it. They may or may not get their first nest right, some do some don't. If not they can always go again. I know it's disapointing for you, but for them practice makes perfect.
Relax and enjoy the experience.

Who knows why they do the things they do b4 I got rid of my zebs they were in a small aviary wih 6 nests ( 2 pair of zebs ) when we checked the nests after they were taken out there were at least 6 eggs in each nest and yet none of them were sitting .
They also left eggs on the floor .
I put it down to them being young and not knowing any better.
Anyway best advice so far has been to relax and enjoy the whole process.
Also as I have said I too have birds inside as part of the family and I gotta admit that they are under the microscope much more than the outdoor birds , maybe you need to not look at them as much just for your own sanity .
My male Quarrion hated me anywhere near the cage but my girl still loved her cuddles and fly time even when on eggs , they are all different .
Try to distance yourself a bit for a while and see if theres any progress .
Accept that some days you are the pigeon, and some days you are the statue.

Well today my pair were happy playing around & giving me cheeky conversation. The hen goes to check on her eggs but that's about all. But then I took an occasional look as the nest is wide open. And she or he has obviously been turning the eggs. It has been hot & humid so maybe they are tending to them correctly. I will leave it all alone & maybe I will wake to find young ones or she will start sitting on them next week. I have them used to getting fed & fresh water in the morning. And they do know I am coming into the room versus another person.

My pair do seem to be minding there four eggs. I noticed the male go and rotate all the eggs & the hen goes over & looks at them. So maybe they are doing what is required. It dont resemble what I thought but what do I know!

Well my pair seemed to be not minding there nest & now I cant get near there cage without some sort of verbal abuse. I was going to give there cage a clean today, but that is not on the books. Thought they had abandoned there nest & FOUR eggs. So they can live in a pig sty LOL. They really better produce some young ones. This ignoring then sudden interest of there is so confusing.

If it was a hot day they may not have felt the need to keep the eggs warm.
Or they may have changed their minds.

Well they are still sitting in the nest. It makes no sense but maybe I will have young ones soon. Would be nice to have some baby Zeb's to add to the Christmas festivities. I would really like to clean there cage it looks horrid, but I dont want to mess up there process. Hopefully they do know what they are doing ?

My pair are not going by any rules I have read about breading birds. But something is going on in there nest. I checked & we have five eggs now. The male is doing most of the nest sitting. But you can see like shadowing inside of the eggs. I have been careful to only look from above as he is very angry when I go close to the nest. I would be happy to see just one baby but the possibility of five. WoW
