Tailfeathers, I know a "top breeder", of coturnix that played with artificial insemination. She used a pipettes to collect and inseminate them. She developed the red coturnix, red tuxedo, tuxedo coturnix Beautiful birds. To do this with finches.... Good grief that would be a job. Knowing what is involved in shipping canine seman counter to counter, is a task at time. I know because I shipped my dogs seman all over the states, 600.00 for the seman, plus traveling expenses and FedEx express delivery. It is very calculated, as the bitch has to be at the counter (vet) on receiving end.
I wonder if bird seman would have to be centrifuged, and put in stabilising solution for shipment?
I wonder if there are good books on bird showing? Like there are in dogs? The joy of breeding your own show dog, Ann Seranne, is my bible when it comes to breeding dogs. Are there books on the politics of birds shows? I would assume there is a fine line between "show quality" and "Pet Quality" in birds as with dogs. If so, wouldn't it be better to have birds from the bloodline you want, and bring them up on both sides of pedigree, so to speak?
I'm sure there is a lot of "ring side" BS in bird shows as in dog shows. Just don't think it would make good economic sense to do this with finches. Wouldn't it be to stressful?

PS: Happy Thanksgiving.
Some things point out our true however you're neglecting the fact that some breeders will not sell their studs

Thanks and I just finished up my good old fashioned american pumpkin pie emm emm

Off topic, but was that with cool whip? Or whipping cream? I make it here but have to make my own pulp. Lol
Couple lollies shop carry the canned Libby's but it's the easy one. Not the good pulp. Lol

Can't you buy a cock bird off the breeder?

Happy you having a wonderful day.

I used cool whip. It's store bought whipping cream.

Some breeders will not sell their males others say they won't sell their female. I tried with some. Like I was intent from the first post, I'd like to get information about and learn from the experience of others when it comes to insemenination because it just streamlines a lot of things for me and others.

I've tried wholesalers for birds and there's never really any stock left on lizard canaries, spanish timbrados, Australian plain heads etc etc. moreover, I really don't like buying from them since they are most likely inbreeding birds to get so many pairs out as quickly as possible. I'm currently making arrangements to swap birds out as soon as they breed and have good quality hatchlings.

That's smart way to go tailfeathers. Personally, I do not colony breed my birds. I cage breed them, and band them in away I know that I'm brreding un related pairs. I'm not opposed to line breeding, which is a form of inbreeding, but the relation of the birds are futher removed.

TailFeathers, with your pair of Red Factors, the female is producing eggs but the eggs are infertile?

In canaries it is actually much easier to buy good quality males than hens. My strategy is actually to buy good quality older canary males as outcrosses. You pretty much have to breed your own good hens.

Exhibition canaries are not really that popular in Australia so it is hard for me to imagine the existence of valuable stud males.

Off topic. Isn't "cool whip" cream in a can? Its not whipping cream, its already whipped (horrible stuff)! Grab some cream, whip with an electric beater and "hey presto" whipped cream!

BTW pumpkin is amazing when seasoned correctly! lots of salt for a pumkin pie! :D

Cool whip was a non dairy whipped dessert topping, manufactured by Kraft.

BOF33, I agree with you on whipping cream. But I have to say you must like salt or it least salty pumpkin pie. I not seen recipes that requires "lots" of salt in a pumpkin pie. I had two people ask me to one for them on their birthday. As sweet potato pie is mmmmmm.

.
Centrifuging would damage the sperm. Finch sperm is extremely small in comparison to mammalian sperm, and has a very different shape. Live sperm could be gathered by inducing the bird to copulate with a model bird and collecting the ejaculate, by clocal massage (depending on species- more easily done with polygynous birds), or potentially by collecting the wet part of a faecal sample (more likely to be deformed/damaged, and brings up possible issues with bacterial infection). It would need to be put into an avian-specific sperm medium and kept cool- I don't know enough about preservation of live sperm to comment on the practicality of it, sorry :/
