Great looking boxes, couple of questions,
Are the boxes easy to tip over with them not having a support on one side?
How much would each box cost?
Are the lids hinged? From the pics it looks like a flat piece with blocks to stop the lid coming off.

hiiii, kinda easy to tip over with some force and if its on an uneven surface, but i cant see a finch landing on top and making it tip, especially if there is nesting material and or babies as well i cant see it tipping at all, you could also hang the box on a wall and never have to worry about it tipping.

i think he will sell them for 10 a box, will have to confirm that thou.

lids are not hinged, it just appeared that way because i was holding the lid with my hand, the little block of wood is to keep the lid on nicely.

Hi Jarryd,

They look like the boxes i got on the weekend from Alan in Gladestone Park....nice guy...he has so much stuff...breeding boxes, carry boxes...rings, etc, etc

If I'm not mistaken he goes to all the sales for those who are interested.

Cheers,
Paul

Paul, Yes you are right, Allan made them for me, he had a stack of right hand L shape nest boxes for a customer, guessing they were yours?

Yes Jarryd that must have been ours...between my Uncle and myself we picked up about 30 boxes.....I now have some Mike Fidler style boxes going real cheap ($5 ea)

The thing i really like about the L shaped boxes is that it has a landing area for the parents to prevent damaging eggs or chicks.....the nesting area is the perfect size....large enough for a clutch of 4-6...but not too large so that they can keep warm easily.

I ordered some left and right handed boxes so that if two boxes are adjacent to each other the entry holes will be as far away from the adjoining box to avoid bickering.

cheers,
Paul

I wouldn't sell your MF boxes to quickly.
If you are cage breeding with single pairs no worries as the boxes have some good points but in a mixed collection at my place
the sloped roof tin topped boxes are used 3 to 1. Infact I am phasing out the L shaped boxes.
I know what can work for one person my fail for another only use and experience will determine your final decision.
My Parrot Finches use them frequently and they normally choose one that is tipping forward more than normal
To do this I just fix a 15mm strip across the top edge of the back then fix the hook plate to that and it tilts forward.
The P F seem to like angle to enter and leave, I don't think the Gouldians care at all though.

Thinking about this I realised that the last two nests built by my BFPF have had that downward facing entry, the last one was so overhung I was surprised that they actually managed to enter the nest at all.

Thanks E Orix....I will still use the Fidler nest boxes, but will mainly have the L shaped boxes....I'll let the birds decide.

I now have heaps of spare nest boxes, but that's OK....I let the result of the next few seasons determine which style the birds like best...cheers, Paul

You are correct,as I have said many times, what works for one person my not work for someone else.
Trial and error and we all should learn from our mistakes as well as our successes.

I'm after some L shaped nest boxes.
Can anyone please recommend somewhere for me to buy them in Wollongong/Sydney or even online
Thanks a lot
Nat
