We have a gouldian hen that was sold as a YH but is actually a very dark orange, almost red. For this reason, and because we like the very light and clean YH, we put her with the RH and she mated with a RH. One of the juveniles out of that aviary (that has another 2 RH pairs) looks like he will be a YH. My question is would he be a "pure" YH, or is he split to RH and can therefore throw back RH chicks? If YH is recessive then it shouldn't be a problem but I am not sure if that is how the head colour works. Thank you

Hi
Yes to get a YH from this pairing the RH cock must be split to YH.
If the YH youngster is a hen then it cannot not be split for anything, if it's a cock then it's possible it could be split for BH if your RH Cock is split YH & BH, a YH cannot be split RH.

I thought it was a hen as the chest feathers that are starting to colour up are light, more mauve than purple. But then "she" started to sing.
although if it is recessive how can other colours come in, as it would be "yy". is the gene somehow sex linked?

Someone correct me if I am wrong. But some colours are dominant and some are recessive. Obviously a bird will show the Dominant gene. And just carry the recessive gene. However if there are 2 recessive genes at the same leval (think of the genetic inheritances as a triangle) they can both be carried and either can wind up showing. Depending on which the bird gets.
Which is why a RH x YH can produce both RH and YH if he is split YH. And if by chance a RH x YH pair of sibs get together and produce all 3 head colours then there is a recessive BH gene in there.

This is where I get confused. If there is a RH split to YH, say it is Rr and a YH being rr, the only combinations I can see are Rr (RH split to YH) or rr (YH). Where would the BH gene come into it?
